Not of This World

Leaders of the world like to boast of the power of their military. They do this to present an image of strength and power. Sometimes that confidence can lead to a false sense of security. A bigger and more powerful army can come in and lay waste in a short time. When Jesus was going to the cross, he was questioned about His kingdom, and He replied, “It’s Not of this World.”

‭‭John‬ ‭18:36‬

“Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”

Heavenly Minded

Jesus was being questioned by Pilate, “tell me about your kingdom?” Jesus proceeds to tell him that His kingdom is not of this world. By that, Jesus means that it is in heaven with His Father. He didn’t have any land to call His own or an army on earth to go to war. Everything He has is in another world. One day He will come and reign over this world for one thousand years, but until that time, it is not of this world. Pilate couldn’t understand that, and many today can’t either. They have a worldly view that doesn’t extend beyond our atmosphere. A follower of Jesus is heavenly-minded and looking for the return of their king.

Needed More

Jesus was a revolutionary, but He never led a revolt. He changed the world without one shot being fired. If His kingdom would’ve been of this world, then His people would’ve fought. Israel wanted the return of a David-like king, but Jesus knew they needed so much more. He brought redemption from sin, a transformation of the heart, and a power that no earthly army could stand against, and it was all packaged in a meek carpenter from Nazareth.

Not of This World

You are a citizen of the country you live in, but you are also a soldier in an army that will be called into battle one day. Jesus will lead us, and He will conquer the kingdoms of this world. Until that time, walk in meekness and humility as you proclaim the Gospel to the lost and hurting. Don’t worry or fret about how this world treats you. They hate Jesus and everything He stands for, which includes you. Instead, return hate with love and persecution with grace.
