Wise Servant I Daily Walk Devotion

Jesus is returning one day. When he does what will he find you doing? Will it be the work you were assigned? We are servants in his kingdom with work to be done. The wise servant is the one who is found doing his work when Christ comes back.

Matthew 24:46-47

“Blessed is that servant whom the master finds doing his job when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

Christ’s Return

This passage is part of a parable on end times. Jesus is explaining to his disciples that no one knows when the rapture will come, not even him. It will happen suddenly, without notice. His instruction to his followers is to be a wise servant. A wise servant is one who is found doing their job when the master arrives.

Wise or Lazy?

As a Christian, we have a decision to make. Will we be about our master’s business or will we slack off until he returns? The wise servant is one who is found doing his required work. The lazy servant is one who cuts corners and quits working unless the master is looking over his shoulder. As a follower of Jesus, we can fall into the same trap.

The Role of a Servant

What is the role of a servant of Christ while we wait for his return? A simple answer would be to remain faithful in our discipleship (i.e., reading God’s word, praying, and being obedient), serve in the church, and to tell others about Jesus. There is much more to those categories, but they give us an overall idea. When we are faithfully following Christ, we fall into the wise servant category.

The Reward for the Servant

The reward for being a wise servant is that we will be rewarded. Servants work their way up in the households they serve. At first, they start with the menial tasks that no one wants to do. When they are found to be responsible with those they are given more desirable jobs. The most faithful servants are the one who oversees the other servants. The master can trust them to do their work when they are not there. As a Christian, when we are found being faithful, we will be rewarded by being entrusted with more responsibility. Eventually, when Christ returns, we will reign with him.

Conclusion

Be a wise servant. It’s is easy to slack off with our duties as a believer. No one is watching, and we don’t get in trouble like we do our jobs, but we have to look at the eternal reward. One day we will have to give an account of what we have done. Will be judged a wise servant or a lazy one?
