One of the best things on earth is seeing someone overcome a major struggle of sin in their lives. It is a picture of victory as you see the freedom in their eyes, the sin rendered powerless. Before, they were slaves to that sin, but now they have been set free. God can do the same thing in your life.
Romans 6:6
“For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be rendered powerless so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin,”
Be Set Free
The struggle with sin in the life of a believer is real. Many have succumbed to its power and given up, yet you can be set free, and the sin rendered powerless in your life. Paul starts by giving you the best news you can get in under these circumstances. When you put your faith in Christ, the penalty of your sin, which is death, is removed. Your eternal destiny is secured, and death no longer has a grip on you. You can walk in confidence, knowing that your life is in Christ’s hands.
Die to Your Old Life
With your future taken care of, you can focus on dealing with the pull of those sins which trip you up. That starts at the cross. Christ died, so your sins would be forgiven. It goes even further because you too must die to your old life. You can’t continue living your past life. You have to crucify those old desires so that your body won’t be ruled by sin. If you don’t crucify them, your spiritual life will be rendered powerless because you are enslaved to sin.
Sin Rendered Powerless
You crucify the old life by surrendering your heart to God. You tell Him that He has everything and is able to do anything He wants in your life. It also happens by you crying out to God for those areas where you struggle. You can’t keep them hidden, thinking you will overcome them on your own. As you allow Christ to work this out, you will see your sin rendered powerless. It will be one of the most freeing feelings you’ve ever experienced.
