My kids have selective hearing. They hear everything I say except for what I want them to hear. My wife happens to ask where we should go for dinner. Bam! They are soon offering their opinion. I ask them to take out the trash, and its as if they transported into a cone of silence. Somehow we expect people who don’t know Jesus to hear about Him miraculously. How are they going to hear? It’s by you preaching the Gospel.
Romans 10:14
“How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher?”
Use Your Words
Paul is very clear that our preaching proclaims the Gospel. We are the ones who need to take the good news to those who haven’t heard it. They won’t stumble into your church, so your preacher can give an altar call. It takes you going into the world you live and building relationships based on integrity and trust and then sharing the message that changed your life.
The Hope of the World
How can people who are lost and broken call on a God they have not put their faith in? They can’t. They may heave some “Hail Mary” prayer when things get terrible, but they have no hope in it being answered because there is no relationship. That comes from hearing how their life can be changed by a loving God who sent His only Son to redeem them. Does your heart have a burden for those who are lost?
How Are They Going to Hear?
Being a preacher doesn’t mean you put on your best clothes and then step into a pulpit and preach hellfire and brimstone. To “preach” means to proclaim. It is you verbally sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Our actions may speak louder than our words, but those are meaningless unless they are backed us sharing. Anyone can do this. You don’t have to be an extrovert. All you have to do is be filled with the Holy Spirit and love the other person enough to share the life-changing message of Christ.
