One of the most difficult situations to handle is when you are disappointed by someone close to you. You put your trust in them, and they let you down. It starts to make you ask yourself: “Who can you trust?” Jeremiah tells us that when we put our trust in other people, we will be disappointed, but when we keep our hearts focused on the Lord, we will see Him come through.
Jeremiah 17:5
“This is what the Lord says: Cursed is the person who trusts in mankind. He makes human flesh his strength, and his heart turns from the Lord.”
Trust Issues
Israel had trust issues. It’s not that they couldn’t trust anybody. It’s that they wanted to trust everyone except the Lord. They paid Egypt to protect them against Assyria. They tried to pay off Assyria not to invade them. They listened to wise men who only told the king what he wanted to hear and didn’t listen to the line of prophets who God had sent. Israel had put their trust in mankind, and because of that, they were cursed, even worse, it turned their heart from the Lord.
Walk By Faith
It is a lot easier to put our trust in something tangible, like another human being. We can see them, hear them, and even touch them, but that is faith by sight. The Apostle Paul tells us to walk by faith, not by sight. We need to put our trust in the Lord whom we can’t see, nor can we hear Him audibly. Putting our trust in mankind will always disappoint us because we are all sinful people. The Lord will never disappoint.
Who Can You Trust?
For thousands of years, Israel saw God do miraculous things in impossible circumstances, yet they had a very short memory. Let’s learn from their mistakes and continue to put our trust in the Lord. Keep our eyes focused on Him and be patient enough to wait for Him to answer. The alternative may seem more appealing, but the result will not be as fulfilling.
