If you think of some of the most exceptional people in history, you will discover some interesting traits common among all of them, humility and service. People like Mother Teresa, Abraham Lincoln, and Billy Graham all exhibited these characteristics. While they are not common amongst most people, Jesus tells us that those who would be considered the greatest in heaven will possess these traits.
Matthew 23:11-12
“But the greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.”
Missing the Mark
Jesus had his hands full with the twelve disciples. They continually needed training and guidance. In this instance, there is a competition going on for who will be the greatest amongst them. That’s incredibly shortsighted, considering they were with someone who was healing people and calming storms. Humility was severely lacking in this group. Jesus takes this opportunity to tell them who will be considered the greatest, the humble servant.
Think Less of Ourselves
In the age of social media, everyone is screaming to the world how great they are. It comes in different forms, but we desperately want the world to know how good we are and approve of it. It is rare when you find a humble voice who wants to build others up and serve. Jesus tells us that we need to possess these traits. To think less of ourselves and look for opportunities to pout into others should be our focus.
Possess These Traits
Make the effort to be a humble servant. Serve in such a way where your left-hand does not know what your right hand is doing. Don’t get discouraged if people don’t acknowledge what you are doing. God is watching from above, and He approves. Seek to lift the downtrodden and minister to the hurting. Pray for open doors to areas where you are most needed. Be open to going where the Spirit leads you. You will find the greatest joy and growth there.
