Food is both essential to survival and an item of pleasure. We need the sustenance to sustain our energy through the day, but at the same time, we can enjoy the preparation, taste, and fellowship that comes with eating. Jesus told His disciples that His food was to do the will of His Father. When we do the will of God, it can be both sustenance to your soul and joy to your life.
John 4:34
“Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.”
Odd Encounter
The disciples happened upon Jesus talking to the Samaritan woman. He had sent them into town to get some food while He rested at the well. When they came back, Jesus was telling the woman who to worship. This both alarmed and confused the disciples. First, a Jewish Rabbi rarely talked to a woman who wasn’t his wife alone. Second, she was a Samaritan, and Jews didn’t associate with them at all because they were considered unclean. For Jesus to be doing both blew their minds.
Listen Carefully
We can let our preconceived notions prevent us from doing the will of God. If we are adamant about certain traditions or rituals in our faith, we could be missing the Holy Spirit’s leading. When we insist on doing things our own way, we miss out on the blessings God intended for us in stepping out in faith. Never be so insistent that you can’t hear the soft, still voice of God speaking to you.
Sustenance to Your Soul
Crave the good food that God has for you. Tell Jesus that you want your heart so in tune with His that it beats in sync. When this happens, we are in for an incredible journey. You will only feel satisfied when you have done what God told you while at the same time experiencing the joy that comes from being in His will. Let Jesus be the sustenance to your soul.
