“Show me a sign.” That is often what people said to Jesus when he was on earth. In Ezekiel God says show me a sign by being obedient to my law. We show a lot of people we are faithful to God by our obedience. How do you show God that you are faithful to him? Is it by your love? John the Apostle said people will know of our love for God by our love for others.
Ezekiel 20:19-20
“I am the LORD your God: Walk in My statutes, keep My judgments, and do them; hallow My Sabbaths, and they will be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the LORD your God.’”
Lip Service
“Show me a sign that you are following me.” That is what God is saying to Israel. All they did was give lip service to the Lord. They didn’t keep the law, they went against His judgments, and they didn’t worship Him on the Sabbath. Everything else was more important.
Walking in Obedience
There is an important principle of walking in obedience to the Lord. It is all thru the Old Testament and continued in the New Testament. In the Old, it was about effort put forth in keeping the law. In the New, it is about being filled with the Spirit and following that leading. We are to walk according to His word. We must keep the Sabbath day holy. These are signs to the Lord that He is our God. Does this mean if we don’t do them we lose our salvation? No, but God is not satisfied with one of his children who call themselves His but show no other signs.
Standing in Judgment
At the Judgment Seat of Christ, there will be people who will say, Lord, Lord I did all these things in your name, and Jesus will reply “Depart from me, I never knew you.” Now some will argue that there are those who all they do is show signs but there is no devotion, and you would be right. Jesus wants those who’s hearts have been transformed and follow after Him.
