Walk into life. There are few things in this world that compare to a sunrise. It’s not just the glowing colors that illuminate a dark sky, it is the warmth and new life that is promised with each morning. It reminds us that we are to live during the day. Jesus tells us to walk in the light because we won’t stumble. We need to remember that light represents righteousness and darkness represents sin.
John 11:9-10
Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light. It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
The Dangers of Darkness
Jesus wants us to walk into life with him. Understand the context here. In Jesus’ time, there was no electricity, no street lights, nothing modern we take for granted. If you went out at night, you walked by the light of a torch or by moonlight. It was common for people to stumble in the unpaved and uneven roads, because of this only the questionable people went out at night. Jesus uses the example to show us that when we walk without Christ, it’s light walking in the complete darkness.
The Life of the Light
Walking into life means that we walk into the light of the Word of God. So many people describe themselves as early birds or night owls to let people know if they are a morning person or a night person. Neither one is better than the other; it’s just our make up. When Jesus is talking to his disciples about daylight and night he is referring to our way of life. Do we like to be in the light of God’s word and walk in His ways or do we like to creep around in the darkness and love our sin (John 3:17). Jesus said that if we walk according to His Word, we won’t stumble, but if we reject that and follow our desires, we will trip up. Which way is your heart leaning? Do you desire to keep your life hidden or do you desire to walk in the warmth of the light?
