Have you ever been walking down a perfectly flat and level path only to trip suddenly? It was like someone reached out and grabbed you. Inevitably, a person near you will say “Watch your step!” In a world full of distractions it is easy to stumble and fall. The same rings true for your daily walk with Jesus. The minute we think we are right is when we can stumble from our sin.
1 Corinthians 10:12
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
Beware of the Subtle Sin
Stumbling in sin is a danger to everyone. Strangely enough, it happens most when things are going good, and we are feeling good about ourselves. Paul warns here that we need to be sober-minded and watchful that we don’t fall. Satan rarely tempts us in obvious ways. It will come when we least expect it.
Watch Your Step
Spiritual pride sets in very subtly. Once it is there, it is challenging to eradicate it. Spiritual pride comes when we think we have it all together or that we can handle a situation on our own. Many people have boasted about aspects of their spiritual life only to fall in some other area of sin. Don’t get too impressed with yourself. King Solomon tells us that pride comes before a fall.
Walk Humbly
Instead, we need to walk humbly and seek the good in others. (1 Cor 10:24) As much as we can, we need to take our focus off of ourselves and place it on those who need it. We need to serve those who can’t take care of themselves. In doing this, it will take our pride and properly place it where it needs to be, in the dumpster. The more we focus on ourselves the greater the danger of stumbling. The more we focus on serving Jesus and helping those who are hurting the less we will stumble over our pride.
