One of the most significant responsibilities I have as a father is to pass on to my children what they need to succeed as adults. I have a very short time, so I need to pass it on to the next generation. The best thing that I can tell them is the wondrous things that God has done for their mom and me. I want to impart to them how powerful God is to all of those who come to him.
Psalms 71:17-18
O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.
Be a Walking Testimony
David felt a responsibility to the pass on what God had shown him. He told stories and wrote songs about how God worked in his life. He never missed an opportunity to tell the people about the power of God. He was a walking testimony for God working in a persons life.
Don’t Miss Out
We can focus so much our children’s education and athletics and entirely leave out instruction on the Bible. In pursuit of success in life, we can miss security with Christ in eternity. David knew what was essential and that was what he proclaimed.
Mentor Younger Believers
There is a responsibility for older people to pass it on to the next generation. This is especially true when it comes to things of God. Titus tells us that the older men are to mentor younger ones. It also tells us that older women are to impart wisdom to younger mothers. We are to proclaim the power of God to the next generation. We need to remind them of his almighty strength. Failing to do to so will raise up a faithless weak generation of believers.
Leave a Legacy
David didn’t want to die until he could pass it on to the next generation. Ask God to give you a passion for imparting the things of Jesus to your children. Don’t allow things to crowd out the time set apart for worshipping the Lord. Remember to share with them how God has worked in your life.
