The ear is a powerful tool God has given us. When it is trained it can detect when an instrument is out of tune, when a child is in trouble, and when someone is telling the truth. This expertise only comes after repeated times of listening. The same goes for wisdom. When we fill our ears with wisdom, then we can hear it when someone speaks it. What are you listening to?
Proverbs 1:20-21
“Wisdom calls out in the street; she makes her voice heard in the public squares. She cries out above the commotion; she speaks at the entrance of the city gates:”
The Perfect Gift for Christmas
It is hard to think this verse is for today. There is not a lot of wisdom out there. Too many opinions are shaped more by personal interests than by wisdom yet wisdom can still be found if you listen. You have to rise above the fray and tune your ears .to hear it. Just like a master tuner with a piano we have to train our ears to hear it.
One Wise Man
Proverbs is the book of wisdom. It is full of nuggets that are easy to remember. King Solomon wrote this at a young age, but he already knew the importance of wisdom. When God spoke to him in a dream and gave him a choice of anything he could ask for, Solomon asked for wisdom. To this day he is known as the wisest man ever to live.
The Wisdom Test
How do we know if what we are listening to is wisdom? First, it has to line up with God’s word. Wisdom will never contradict what God has said in the Bible. Second, we need to consider the source. Is it reliable and trustworthy? Too many pundits today are self-serving and to accept what they say without discernment can be foolish. Finally, are the masses following it? Wisdom often goes against the tide of influence. Just because everyone believes it does not make it true. That is why wisdom is crying out above the commotion. One last thing, wisdom is only useful if it is put into action.
