Many people are making resolutions for the new year, and usually part of that is getting their financial house in order. You will see several news articles on how to invest your money to get the most return. All of these are important, but as a believer in Jesus Christ, we also have another standard to measure ourselves. What are you investing in this year? Jesus tells us that where your treasures are stored, there you will find your heart.
Matthew 6:19-21
Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.
Practical Advice
This passage is from the Sermon on the Mount, one of the most practical passages in all of the New Testament. In those three chapters in Matthew Jesus advises on all areas of life, including your finances. He states that our priority should be to invest in the things that matter. While being smart with our money is important, what we spend that money and how we use our time is even more so.
Choose Wisely
Obtaining possessions and building our financial portfolio are two of the hallmarks of a successful life. While there is prudence in doing the latter frequently, the former is more for our pride. We want to show others our success, and nothing says that more than a big house or an expensive car. Jesus counters that by telling us to invest in the eternal things.
True Contentment
What are these eternal treasures that cannot be destroyed? Giving to others is at the top of the list. There is a certain amount of contentment that comes from giving. We get the satisfaction here on earth while at the same time securing our heart in heaven. Earthly possessions will fade away, and you can’t take them with you when you die. Heavenly treasures live on forever. Set your heart on the right things this year.
