Always trust your tour guide. When I was in a foreign country, a guide for another group was telling his people to avoid a specific area because they could walk off a short cliff into a pool. The guard railing wasn’t up, and he didn’t want anyone to fall in. Sure enough, two people weren’t listening, and they were trying to get the perfect picture, and they walked right off the cliff and plunged into the pool. Jesus tells us that we have a guide for life, which will lead us on the right path.
John 16:13
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.
Instruct in the Truth
Jesus is telling the disciples that the Holy Spirit is going to be their guide after He leaves. The Spirit is going to lead them in where to go and instruct them in all truth. This truth won’t come from Him but will come from God the Father. The disciples didn’t understand that when Jesus is telling them, but they got it after the day of Pentecost. The book of Acts is an account of what the Holy Spirit did through the disciples.
Filled with Wisdom
This same guide is in us too. When we receive Christ, we are filled with the Holy Spirit. He is there to show us the truth and give us direction. We can tap into that wisdom just by praying to Him. Many people forsake this resource and go with their gut. They trust their feelings and do what they think is best. That only ends up in frustration and failure. Learn how to lean, not on your understanding, but on the one who teaches you the truth.
Lead Us on the Right Path
Paul told us to walk in the Spirit. That means learning to follow the Spirit’s leading daily. That is something that we need to train ourselves to do. We need to sense His leading and the act upon it, and we need to submit to the conviction of our sin when He sends it. Doing these will expand our faith and will fill us with the truth.
