Have you ever walked into a store where no workers are found, and the shelves are in complete chaos? I bet one of the first things you thought was, “Who’s in Charge?” The same can be said of many households because they have neglected God’s ordained order. Paul lays out who’s in charge of leading the family.
1 Corinthians 11:3
“But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.”
To Function Properly
First, we must understand that at the top is God overseeing His Son, Jesus. Jesus has been given all authority over humanity, which extends to the household. Jesus is the head of every man, and the man is the head of the woman. This pertains only to married households. Men are not over every woman, and their authority over others stops at the threshold of their front door. God established order in the family so that it would function properly.
Broken Order
When that order is broken by an absent man (whether in body or mind) or by a rebellious wife, the household starts to break down. Absentee fathers leave children with no example to follow and pile extra responsibilities upon the wife. If she has to make all the decisions, it produces anxiety and frustration. A woman competing for authority with a man creates tension beyond marriage. Both of these are often the result of Jesus not being over both of them.
Who’s In Charge?
Ever since the first sin, this has been a challenge for every household. Society doesn’t make it any easier when it puts its expectations on men and women. Both spouses need to be committed to Jesus Christ and understand their roles to correct it. When this happens, many of the challenges that face families are eased, and peace can reign in the house. Don’t lose hope if your situation is in disrepair. Fulfill your role to the best of your abilities and let God work the rest out.
