The Discovery Channel is running a show right now called Serengeti. It’s a real-life take on the movie Lion King. The cameras are following lions, monkeys, hyena’s, and other animals as they struggle to survive the hard living conditions of that region. What’s fascinating is the hierarchy of the packs of animals. The leader is always clear, and when they call out, the whole pack follows. They are a voice in the wilderness amid so much activity. God’s Word acts the same way in the world we live in.
Isaiah 40:3
A voice of one crying out: Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness; make a straight highway for our God in the desert.
Prepare the Way
This is a prophecy about the ministry of John the Baptist. He was a voice in the wilderness, literally. People would flood down from Jerusalem to hear this strange man in Camels Hair clothing tell them that they are sinners! He would then baptize them in the Jordan. This was all in preparation for the coming of the Messiah.
Speak the Truth
There are a lot of spiritual parallels today with this passage. The world has become this wilderness of everyone doing their own thing. Anyone who speaks the truth of God’s Word is a voice in the wilderness, and we are perceived as strange. Oddly enough, people are still flocking to hear the truth. Some people are lost and hurting and are looking for answers. We can’t allow dissenters to silence our voice. We need to keep our eyes focused on those in need and not let the fear of reprisal to intimidate us.
A Voice in the Wilderness
When we speak the Word of God, it is like a stream in the desert. It quenches the parched, but it also revives and renews the spirit. Be a source of life and hope to those who are worn down. Speak the truth to those who are wayward and point them back to Jesus. A voice in the wilderness is what this world needs.
