There is a saying in Christianity that sounds so practical it almost seems Biblical. It goes, “Don’t be so heavenly minded you are no earthly good.” I get the just behind it, we are to focus on the world we have to do, but it runs counter to what the Bible says. Paul tells us to be heavenly minded for a good reason. The things of this earth can downright depress you. Our hope is in Jesus, and He is sitting at the right hand of God. Focus your mind there.
Colossians 3:1-2
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
Cure for Discouragement
The Colossians were a growing young church, and Paul is helping them focus on the essential things of life. They were getting discouraged by what was happening in the Roman empire with all of the persecution of the church and their awareness of how much sin was apparent. This would quickly get anyone down, so Paul tells them to concentrate on what is important and let God take care of the rest.
Find Your Hope in Jesus
This text is just as vital for us today. I see too many angry and discouraged Christians who are miserable because they see what is going in the world. If we have been raised with Christ, which means we have died to our old life and made new creations in Christ, then our hope is in Jesus. Since our hope is in Him, we need to set our minds on things above where He is. It doesn’t mean we forget our responsibilities here on earth, but our encouragement comes from Jesus, not our life here.
Focus Your Mind
Focus your mind on the goodness of Jesus. Remember everything He has done for you. Be grateful that you were a sinner headed for hell, but He saved you from death’s grip and put His righteousness in you. Seek wisdom from above instead of the advice of people. Acknowledge God’s work in your life before others. These are all practical tips on how to focus your mind.
