Hebrews 9:13-14, 22
For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. According to the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Sufficient Sacrifice
The Old Testament sacrifice system required the blood of an animal to be offered for purification from sin. Without the shedding of blood, there could be no forgiveness of sins. When Christ came, he offered his own blood to purify us so we could serve the living God. When you ponder that for a moment you start to understand the power of the cross. We could not be purified in the eyes of God unless there were a sufficient sacrifice and the only one who could fulfill that was the one who lived without blemish, Jesus Christ.
Only One Path
We can’t acquire forgiveness any other way than thru the blood of Jesus. It doesn’t matter how many good works we do to get right in God’s eyes, the writer of Hebrews calls them dead works. Human nature gets so guilt-ridden that it can’t live with itself unless it does something to take away the nagging feeling. People will run themselves ragged trying to feel better. Forgiveness is offered to everyone who has put their trust in Jesus and comes to him and confesses their sins.
Live in Freedom
Jesus, out of his complete love for us, willingly offered himself as the perfect sacrifice. He put himself in our place so we could live in freedom. Satan will bring condemnation upon us and ratchet up the guilt, but the blood of Jesus removes that and brings us into the presence of God. If you are struggling with the guilt of your past and feelings of unworthiness take those feelings to Jesus and have him wash them clean. You can walk in his love and the power of the Spirit today.
