It’s Good Friday. Why is it called that when Jesus was put to death on the cross? It’s because of the work that was accomplished by Him that day. It appeared terrible for Him, but in reality, it was the whole reason He came to earth, and the end result of what was completed gives Him great joy. Jesus bridged the gap between God and us. He hung on the cross and took all of our sins so that we could be right with His Father. When Jesus uttered the words “It Is Finished,” He was done with that sacred work.
John 19:30
30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished,” and He bowed his head and gave up His spirit.
Became Our Substitute
The work that Jesus had been sent to do was finished. He had accomplished the will of His Father. Three short words summarize the atoning work of the cross. He had taken our sin and became our substitute, and it had satisfied the wrath of God. The perfect sacrifice had been accepted, and Jesus gave up His spirit. His body had been broken, and His blood poured out so that we could be made right with God.
