I grew up in churches with wooden tables placed right under the pulpit. It was where they placed elements for communion and flowers for funerals. On the front lip was inscribed today’s passage. Hebrews 13:8 was one of the first verses I became familiar with as I grappled with the meaning of its theology. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Even as a young child, I would see these words burnt into the wood on the table, and it gave me a quiet assurance that Jesus never changes.
HEBREWS 13:8
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Remember Who Taught
The writer of Hebrews is closing his letter, and it is very familiar to the ending of many of Paul’s letters (just throwing that out there). He tells his readers to remember the leaders who taught them the Word of God and imitate their faith. Then he goes on to say that Jesus never changes. He is the same loving God He was before He came to earth as He is today. Feelings don’t dictate His actions. Truth does. You can put your faith in Him because of that consistency.
His Mercy is New
The best part about Jesus never changing is that you never have to worry. He is the same today as He was yesterday and will be the same tomorrow. His mercy is new every morning, and His love never runs out and isn’t dependent upon your actions. He loved you while you were still a sinner, and the love will remain constant for the rest of eternity.
Jesus Never Changes
You can walk in confidence because of that assurance. Jesus’ unconditional love isn’t earned or lost based on your sins. It remains constant. Don’t let fear overcome you. Walk in peace and joy, knowing that the righteousness of Christ has been deposited inside of you. It’s not your old life that lives anymore. It is the life of Christ.
