It is difficult to figure out which ministry is legit nowadays. Technology has made it easy for ministers to increase their reach while at the same time creating a facade of an alternate reality. How does a disciple discern who is legit and who is fake? Paul gives us some guidance in today’s passage. Look for ministers who show both power and conviction.
1 THESSALONIANS 1:5
“for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.”
Led by the Spirit
Paul sets his ministry apart from all of the other traveling ministers by reminding the Thessalonians that they ministered in the power of the Holy Spirit. He wasn’t an eloquent speaker like many who traveled around making their living. He came to a city under the conviction of the Spirit and then ministered under His power. Lives were changed and a church was started in the city because of this power and conviction.
Beware of the Wolves
You need to be aware of those who minister with the wrong motives. They come for their personal glory or your money. Usually, there is something flashy to catch your attention and then they use manipulative tactics to draw you in. the Bible refers to these ministers as false prophets and wolves in sheep’s clothing. Use discernment and wisdom when you come in contact with them.
Power and Conviction
How do you know if someone ministers in power and conviction? First, they are clothed in humility. It isn’t about them. It’s about Jesus. Second, they teach and speak the truth of God’s Word. They hold a reverence for it. Finally, it isn’t about impressing you, but about seeing the Holy Spirit do a work in your heart. They will preach hard truths to bring conviction of sin and change in your heart.
