Everyone wants to live forever. No one wants to die. Most people would choose immortality if they had the chance. To be impervious to disease or death would change the way we live. As Christians, we will be raised to immortality. On that day when the trumpet sounds and Christ returns our earthly bodies will be exchanged for immortal one.
1 Corinthians 15:42-49
So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
We Will Be Changed
The Corinthians believed that Jesus was resurrected from the dead but had a hard time believing that they would be resurrected. Paul answers that doubt by telling them that their earthly bodies are perishing, but their one day those will be exchanged for an imperishable body. That was a hard pill for them to swallow because they took so much pride in their bodies. We will be immortal in heaven. No more tears, no more pain. It will all be swept away as our perfected bodies will replace it.
To Live is Christ
We spend so much time and money trying to preserve our perishing bodies. We should try another tactic. Instead of indulging ourselves and then having to diet and exercise ourselves back into shape lets deny our flesh and focus on the adventure Jesus has in store for us. Spend time in the Bible seeking his will, seek him in prayer for the direction to go, and when he opens the doors walk through them. Then we can repeat the words Paul says in Philippians 1:21 “To live is Christ, to die is gain.” While we live here on earth, it is all about going where Christ leads us. When it is time for us to die, we know with confidence that we are losing but instead we are gaining so much more.
