Your heart is the symbol of all of your feelings and emotions. It is the most sensitive place, and you protect it at all costs. This doesn’t mean that you don’t let people in so you won’t get hurt, but you keep it from evil. Take care to guard your heart so that you don’t fall away from the living God.
Hebrews 3:12
“Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God.”
Can You Lose Your Faith?
This is an interesting verse. Can someone fall away from their faith? I’ve seen multitudes of people who were at one time on fire for their faith in Jesus Christ, being used for His glory, only to years later walk away. Have these people lost their salvation? I don’t think so, but I do think they have left it. No one can steal or take away another’s salvation, but I think the individual can personally vacate their faith. They do this by walking away from the church, forsaking the brethren’s fellowship, and willfully participating in a sinful lifestyle.
When You’ve Gone Too Far
Some people do this for a short period of time, then through the prodding of the Holy Spirit, come back to the faith, but others have left and have resisted continued efforts to reach out to them. Now, some in the church will say that they were never saved in the first place and that the fruit that was evident in their life was false fruit. I have a harder time believing that than I do them leaving their faith. Faith is a choice and never forced on anyone. If that is the case, then it is valid on the other end.
Take Care to Guard Your Heart
This is why the writer of Hebrews tells you to take care to guard your heart. When you allow bitterness and anger to take over, it turns your heart towards evil. You need to heed the conviction of the Holy Spirit and repent of any sins that may take root. Left unchecked over time, will lead to you falling away from your faith.
