Today is my twenty-second wedding anniversary. I am married to the most wonderful woman, and there is no one I would choose to be around than her. Her love for Jesus supersedes everything else in her life. As a wife, mother, and school teacher she strives to glorify God in everything she does. I have truly married a Proverbs 31 woman, an excellent wife. Today’s verse describes her perfectly.
Proverbs 31:26-27
“Her mouth speaks wisdom, and loving instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the activities of her household and is never idle.”
A High Standard
A Proverbs 31 woman is someone who is Godly and proficient in their daily activities. The writer of this chapter sets the bar high for the woman of the house. Some of the attributes listed are trustworthy, works with her hands, rises early to feed her family, prudent with the resources, etc. Many women have struggled with these because they feel the burden is too much to bear but that isn’t what the author is trying to do, he is praising the women who keep their households going.
Loving Words
A loving wife and mother speaks wisdom and loving instruction to those in her household. She seeks to build up instead of tearing down. Words have incredible power, especially with our children. Speaking wisdom is something they need to hear and see implemented. Loving instruction understands that children come into this world as a blank slate and it is the parent’s role to fill that with guidance that will lead to independence. A Proverbs 31 wife does this.
Fill the House with Wisdom
The faithful wife is also someone who watches the activities of the house and is never idle. I can tell you that when my wife suggests that we relax she rarely means sitting on the couch and watching TV, she usually means cleaning, laundry, and yard work. She rarely sits during the day because her mind is always thinking of what needs to be accomplished. Having four kids helps with this. An excellent wife will fill her house with wisdom and loving instruction.
