One of the pictures we have in our mind of heaven is when the clouds part and rays of light shine down. We speak of it as the heavens were opened up and God’s face was shining down on us. When Jesus was baptized the heavens were opened up, literally, and God showed his pleasure. When we come to Christ God shows his pleasure by sending the Holy Spirit to us as well.
Matthew 3:16
“When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.”
Descending Like a Dove
The heavens were opened up. That was a powerful moment in which God opened the heavens and poured out the Holy Spirit upon His Son. Jesus saw it descending in the form of a dove. The all-powerful Holy Spirit represented by one of the most gentle creatures on earth. This shows us the encompassing greatness of our God. He is powerful yet gentle, mighty yet tender, holy yet gracious. It is with this balance that Jesus worked under during his ministry on earth.
Full Access
When Jesus was crucified, the veil was torn in two. Access to God was once again possible. Heaven was opened up, and we have full access to God. The Holy Spirit was sent to strengthen that. We are called to be filled with the Spirit. Gentle as doves yet working in the gifts bestowed upon us. Our daily walk should be one that walks in the Spirit. He is to be our guide and our strength. As we respond to His leading, we will see the power manifested in our lives in so many ways. As He moves, it will be as if the heavens are being opened up.
