You can never have enough light in my book—overhead lights, table lamps, and even lights that illuminate the background. I like to see what I am doing. My wife doesn’t agree with me. I will often turn the lights in, and then she will come in and turn half of them off. Not sure we will ever agree, but as I type this, I am sitting in utter darkness—only the light of the computer for me to see. John tells us that God is the light we need, and in Him, there is no darkness.
1 John 1:5
“This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.”
Your Love for Others
The Apostle John was part of Jesus’ inner circle. He followed Him around for three years. After that, he became one of the church leaders and took the Gospel all over the known world. His message was straightforward, Jesus loves you, so you should love others. Evidence of your changed life was based on your love for others. If you didn’t love your neighbor, your salvation was a lie. In his first Epistle, John brings this message home. The only way that you can love others is with the Light of the World residing in you.
Darkness Must Flee
John starts by telling his readers that God is light and in Him, there is no darkness at all. Darkness can’t exist where there is light. You turn a light on in a dark room, and the darkness flees. The same happens in your heart. Let Jesus in, and the darkness of this world has to scatter because it can’t withstand the light.
The Light We Need
In John’s Gospel, he tells us that darkness hates the light. This world and all of its evil hate the light Jesus brings. As a Christian, you are to come into the light and draw closer to Jesus. You can’t linger in the shadows keeping an eye on the light. You have to forsake the temptations of the world and fill your heart with the light of Jesus Christ.
