Everyone is looking for the secret to happiness. People write books, sell seminars, and create experiences promising that path to a blessed life. All of it leaves a lot to be desired, and you’re still seeking it afterward. Thankfully with the Bible, you don’t need to search any longer. The writer of Psalm 128 gives us the secret to happiness. You will find your life blessed and overflowing if you do these two things.
PSALMS 128:1
“How blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, Who walks in His ways.”
The Blessed Life
David wrote many of the psalms. This isn’t one that he penned, but there is a recurrent theme that we see time and time again. The author wants the reader to live a blessed life. Another word for blessed can be happy. I don’t even have to ask if you want to be blessed or happy. He lays out what it takes to achieve that status, fear the Lord, and walk in His ways. As the Psalm goes on, there are promises of eating the fruit of the labor of your hands, and it goes well with you and your wife.
What is Biblical Fear?
What does it mean to fear the Lord? Fear is a word that triggers people in different ways. For some, it conjures up emotional scars of parents who harmed them, while others think of the awe and reverence you would give a king or queen. Fear when it comes to God is a combination of respect and reverence. You recognize that He is the Almighty God while at the same time loving and compassionate. He is your Heavenly Father, but also a sovereign God.
The Secret to Happiness
Armed with a healthy dose of Godly fear, you need to walk in His ways. That means you need to obey His Word. Lip service isn’t going to cut it. You have to commit His Word to your heart and then act on it. When you combine Godly fear with walking in His ways, you will find this well of happiness gushing up from inside of you. Obedience produces spiritual fruit, and that fruit brings blessings. Life is better when you are filled with love, joy, peace, and patience.
