Baseball season is right around the corner. Soon stadiums will be filled with fans cheering for their team and favorite players. One of the odd things about baseball is the routine the player goes through before he bats. You will see them adjust their helmet, tighten their batting gloves, scrape at the dirt in the batter’s box with their cleats. Some do this between every pitch. They do it to prepare themselves, but in reality, it’s mostly just superstition. Baseball players are some of the most superstitious people on earth. Christians can be superstitious in their daily walk thinking it is pleasing to God. Paul tells us to walk in obedience instead.
1 Corinthians 7:19
“Circumcision does not matter and uncircumcision does not matter. Keeping God’s commands is what matters.”
Going thru the motions
In many of the churches, Paul ministered to a debate broke out between the Jews and the Gentiles over circumcision. This was one of the most sacred acts to the Jew because it symbolized separating from the flesh and setting our hearts unto God. The problem with it is that it had become more about the physical act than the spiritual commitment behind it. Paul tells the Corinthians that what matters most is obedience.
Keep God’s commands
It is really easy to get caught up in superstitions as a Christian. We need to remember that keeping God’s commands is what matters. An act like circumcision is not going to make us better than other people. It also doesn’t symbolize that we have set ourselves apart. In the old testament, it was a sign of being different than the pagan cultures that surrounded Israel. Today we set ourselves apart from the world by being obedient to God’s word.
Every Christian should strive for obedience. We are not going to hit the target every time, but it is the standard by which we should live. We keep God’s commands because it is good advice for life. It saves us from sin and helps us avoid the pitfalls that trip so many people up. Get God’s word in your heart so you will know what to do and then watch as obedience changes us from the inside out.
