The gifts of the Spirit are a facet of our faith that needs to be exercised. Paul clearly states that the Holy Spirit gives us gifts meant to build up the body of Christ. Each believer is given certain gifts. They aren’t for our benefit but the edification of others.
1 Corinthians 12:7-11
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
Wisdom & Knowledge
First, you have two gifts that often work hand in hand; Wisdom & Knowledge. These gifts aren’t about intelligence and education but God revealing His wisdom to us to speak into other people’s lives. The gift of knowledge is God revealing information about a situation or person that we would have no way of knowing. Often God will disclose knowledge to a person and then give wisdom on how to go from there.
Faith & Healing
Some people are given the gift of faith, which allows them to have incredible trust in the Lord for specific situations. God has used some to bring healing in other people’s lives. Healing isn’t a constant gift, but one that God uses when He deems necessary. To some, God has given the gift of miracles. We see this a lot in the first-century church, but you still hear reports of God doing amazing miracles worldwide.
Gifts of the Spirit
To another person, he will give the gift of prophecy. This hearing from God that you speak to an individual or a group. Still, others have the gift of discernment. When something is wrong, these people tend to sense it out first and sound the alarms. Finally, you have the gifts of tongues and interpretation. This one probably scares people the most. To give a message in tongues is to speak in a holy utterance that no one understands. This necessitates the next gift, which is the gift of interpretation of those tongues. Anything supernatural always puts people on edge, but these are gifts of the Holy Spirit, and when used correctly, they are powerful and effective. They didn’t disappear after the last Apostle died, as some maintain but are still at work today.
