Two defining marks of every Christian should be to show mercy and compassion. Whenever Jesus encountered a group of people he was moved with compassion, he saw them as sheep without a shepherd. As the fruit of the Spirit grows inside us, mercy and compassion become natural reactions. Pray for opportunities to show mercy and compassion.
Zechariah 7:9-10
“This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor.Do not plot evil against each other.
Protect the Poor
When sin reigns, human decency goes out the window. Israel was plagued with self-indulgent sin which led to the poor being oppressed. Zechariah warns that justice, mercy, and compassion are to be marks of the Christian faith. Justice is more than doing the right thing; it is protecting those who don’t have the means to protect themselves. Justice is standing up for those who are wronged.
Defend the Defenseless
Compassion is seeing those who are without taken care of. It’s providing for their needs but also giving support. The church should be on the forefront of showing compassion to those who cannot defend themselves. They should be the first place people think of when they are in need. It is our job to step in and protect people when there is injustice being done.
Stand in the Gap
Compassion doesn’t have to be on a grand scale. We can minister to people on a personal level. Do you know a person down on their luck? Comfort them and be an advocate for their rights. Are there poor people who are being taken advantage of? Be their support system. Look for people who can’t help themselves and fill in the gap.
