Conspiracy theories run amok on the internet. There is rarely a day that goes by when I don’t hear of some new plot by the government to control our lives. Some of them are ridiculous, but others are tantalizing because they had a morsel of truth to them. As a believer in Jesus Christ we don’t need to worry about these nor should we get caught up in them. Don’t be fooled all they do is produce fear in our hearts.
Isaiah 8:12
“Do not call everything a conspiracy these people say is a conspiracy. Do not fear what they fear; do not be terrified.”
Ignore Them
Conspiracy theories aren’t new. They were floating around in Isaiah’s day. With the nation in sin and turmoil, it was easy for the general population to speculate about what the King was doing and their philosophy behind it. What was even worse was the king and his advisors believing some of these theories about other nations and what they wanted to do to Israel. Isaiah has to give a prophecy from God to tell these people to ignore them.
Stop the Fear
Technology and quick communication have allowed these rumors to speak like wildfire in the church. Some of the most popular speakers and podcasters within Christianity are people who spread these conspiracies. The danger is that they are enticing and entertaining. We want to believe the worst about what the government and what its intentions are. The problem is that it produces fear in our hearts and renders people terrified and paralyzed in their faith. When this happens, Satan has won the spiritual battle by using doubt and discouragement to render us useless.
Guard Your Heart
Guard your heart and mind against the trivial stories. If someone throws these out in conversation ask them questions to clarify their position. It will often reveal a false foundation. Most of all, don’t let the fear of man supersede your faith in Jesus Christ. He is Almighty and sovereign, and no one is going to overcome Him or His church. Stand firm in your faith and back it up with the Word of God. When you do this, you will find a feeling of peace and serenity cascading over you.
