Walls were built in Biblical times to fortify cities. The bigger the wall the harder it was for the enemy to attack. They would build fortified walls that were often thick enough chariots to race side by side on. God built Jeremiah into a fortified wall to resist the persecution he was getting from his own people. Their attacks would come and they wouldn’t be able to penetrate.
Jeremiah 15:20-21
And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, declares the Lord. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.”
A Prophet, not a Politician
Most people would advise Jeremiah to make friends and not enemies. They would tell him to watch his words so as not to offend others. Maybe they would suggest he read “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” Why? Well, it appeared that everyone had it out for Jeremiah. Every time he opened his mouth he was upsetting someone. This eventually got to Jeremiah and who could blame him? If everyone treated you like the enemy you would feel the same.
Covered By God
God had other plans though. Instead of making others like Jeremiah he told him he would make him a bronze wall. During this time a bronze wall was impenetrable. You couldn’t scale it or break through it. So God is telling Jeremiah “Don’t worry, I got you covered.” When people come against you I will make you so strong no one will overcome you. “I am with you to save you and deliver you.” Think about those words for a second. God comforts Jeremiah with some powerful words. He could’ve stopped with “I am with you.” Who needs anything else? But God continued on and told him he would deliver him out of the hand of the wicked.
We Are Overcomers
Do you know that this is what God promises to us as well? First off He is always with us. He never leaves us nor forsakes us. When Satan and his demons come after us we don’t have to fear. He has also made us victorious, or as the NKJV says it, overcomers. Don’t fear what is in front of you but stand firm and watch God deliver you.
