Soupy Sales was a comedian who coined the famous phrase “The Devil made me do it.” That is the mentality that a lot of people have when it comes to temptation. The devil enticed me with it, and I couldn’t help but go along. The truth is that God provides a way out. We don’t have to be slaves to our sin and trip over every temptation that comes our way.
1 Corinthians 10:13
“No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation, he will also provide a way out so that you may be able to bear it.”
Myth Buster
One of the common myths in Christianity today is that God won’t give you more than you can handle. That’s not true. He will often put us in situations that overwhelm us and are beyond our resources. He gives us more than we can handle so that we will trust and rely upon him. The truth is that he won’t allow you to be tempted beyond what you can handle, big difference and two completely different things.
You Are Not Alone
Temptation is something that all of us encounter, usually daily. There isn’t a temptation out there that is unique to you. There are millions of people like you who are struggling with the same thing. Even Jesus was tempted like the rest of us. What the devil tries to do is isolate you and make you feel like you are the only one giving into this desire. In our shame and embarrassment, we attempt to keep it secret.
God Provides a Way Out
Fortunately, God provides a way out. If we are feeling the pressure to give in, we can look to God and cry out for help. He will give us a way to escape from it so that we don’t stumble into sin. You never have to feel like you are trapped. Isn’t it great that we have a God who cares for us so much that he protects and provides for us in every situation? Test it out. Next time you want to give in to an urge you know is a sin, stop and pray, and watch what God does.
