After every college basketball national championship, they play the song “One Shining Moment.” It highlights all of the great moments of the tournament. Players dream of being in the highlight reel. It’s their moment of fame. As Christians, we are awaiting our shining moment when Christ returns for his bride, the church.
1 Corinthians 15:50-58
Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.
The Blink of an Eye
In one shining moment, like the blink of an eye, our lives will change. One moment we will be focusing on the cares of this world. “How are we going to pay the bills?” “What is the best path for my children?” “Where are we going to go on vacation?” The next moment the trumpet from heaven will sound and it all will change.
No More Sorrow
In one shining moment we will go from bodies that are decaying to heavenly bodies that will never die. We will be raptured and our earthly bodies will be exchanged for heavenly ones. From mortal to immortal. Jesus will take his church to be with him for eternity. There will be no more sorrow and no more pain. Our bodies and souls groan for this moment. With that in mind, Paul implores us to be steadfast in our obedience, immovable in our resistance to temptation and focused on the work the Lord has for us. It is not in vain.
