Have you tried to buy flour lately? Every grocery store that I go to is completely sold out. Sure, you can purchase almond flour and coconut flour, but those are cheap imitations of the real thing. When a crisis hits, people fall back on those things that are essential, like flour, sugar, and water. Bread is one of the basics of everyone’s diet, and Jesus shows us that we need more than bread, we need to Word of God.
Matthew 4:4
“But He answered and said, “It is written,’ Man Shall Not Live On Bread Alone, but On Every Word That Proceeds Out Of The Mouth Of God.’
Tempted and Hungry
Jesus said this as the Devil was tempting him in the wilderness. He has just fasted 40 days and is hungry. Satan is testing Him by saying, “Turn these stones into bread.” Jesus replies that we need to depend on God more than we do food. That’s a hard lesson to learn because we think our basic needs like food, water, and shelter are the most important. Jesus is showing us that He is more important.
Barren Shelves
Many Christians are running around trying to provide the basics for our families while they are starving themselves spiritually. They make sure the shelves all full of supplies, but they are barren in their heart. Jesus told us to store up treasures in heaven where moth and dust can’t destroy, but in a panic, we stock up on toilet paper. It is times like these where we need to asses what is essential and what is not.
We Need More than Bread
How do we live on the Word of God? By reading, believing, and living by its truth. There are so many lies and half-truths out there, and if we don’t have the truth in us, we will starve spiritually. The truth helps us discern what is right and wrong. It helps us to guide our path when we are making decisions. It draws our hearts toward God instead of the world. Feed on the truth of Scripture.
